My page margins are really off?

I opened microsoft word and the page margins were completely off for some reason. Usually I open it and it's where it needs to be for all my school papers. i tried to change it by clicking on the normal setting, but nothing changes. the cursor is at the very top of the paper, touching the top line. I need to fix it for MLA....thanks for any help. oh, and I can't even move the margins on the side (vertical line)....
