Hit a rough patch but wanna make it work. Help!?

I told my boyfriend I loved him and he didn't say it back. I over reacted and got upset cuz he said it three months ago, now he didn't. Throughout the week we've barely seen each other but I work evenings and he has midterms. So thursday we talked and I told him I don't want this to be over, he said he doesn't know if he can be in a relationship but wants to try. Then friday we talk and he says he still doesn't know how he feels so I stormed out of his place and said see ya! I forgot my slippers tho... Instead of driving away I went back in and he was bawling! He said he just wants it to work but doesn't know if he is capable of ever falling in love... I told him if he's crying then he cares and shouldn't give up but let's try. He agreed. Then Saturday morn I went over to his place and says he still doesn't know so he doesn't wanna put me through pain and wants to end it. After crying a lot we decide to spend one last day together and get wasted. We had such a blast we talked and he said he knows he wants to try making it work cuz he doesn't want to give us up. I really want this to work so any advice for me? Like I know we need to give it space and go slow but what do you suggest?
