I have a quilting question! Please help me out!?

I just cut my sashing strips for my twin size quilt. This is my first time making a quilt and it's for my school project. It said in the instructions to add a 1/2 seam allowance when cutting the strips. So I'm not sure if I did this right... I cut my sahing stips and I added a 1/2 seam allowance on all four sides of the strip. Is that what I was supposed to do? Help!
